US swimmer Ryan Lochte was robbed at gunpoint while in Rio de Janeiro overnight Saturday, NBC News has confirmed.

The cab stopped to get gas, and a group of people confronted the pair with guns and knives – and according to Ileana, who says Lochte texted her after the event, the robbers made off with his wallet.

“He parted ways with Lochte when he returned to his hotel with his wife”. The USOC is expected to issue a statement on the matter.

The swimmer himself later confirmed the reports to TODAY’s Billy Bush on Sunday, saying he and “three other swimmers” were robbed at gunpoint.

“I think they’re all shaken up”, Lleana Lochte told Axon.

Ryan’s coach, David Marsh, however, disputed Ileana’s claims and told USA Today that the athlete “was not held up”.

“We got pulled over, in the taxi, and these guys came out with a badge, a police badge, no lights, no nothing just a police badge and they pulled us over. The taxi was robbed”.

As for the reaction from the Olympic organisers, Rio spokesperson Mario Andrada has addressed this latest situation, although has failed to confirm whether Lochte was actually threatened with a gun.

USOC said it was finding out “truth and details”. They took the swimmer’s wallet, but he was not harmed. Ileana Lochte and Lochte’s agent did not immediately return phone calls and text messages from The Associated Press.

Several reports emerged on Sunday morning that Ryan Lochte was held at gunpoint in Rio during a party he was invited to on Saturday night.
