The unbelievably decorated American swimmer – and owner of 23 career Olympic gold medals – is calling it quits, and after last night’s 4×100 meter medley relay final, in which the helped the United States set an Olympic record, he sure went out on a high note!

“I’m at a loss of words”, Phelps said.

His teammates were initially and understandably incredulous, but not because the announcement was unexpected – they were in fact the opposite.

One of the greatest Olympians of all time, U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps, drew a large TV crowd for his final race.

“We’ve had an unbelievable Games and so many people getting their hand to the wall one after another we’ve fed off that and this is a great way to end”.

Phelps, who turned 31 in June, broke more records in Rio.

The Americans finished in three minutes, 27.95 seconds, an Olympic record, to win by 1.29 seconds.

For Bolt, the day was the start of his attempt to become the first man to win the three track and field sprint events – the 100 meters, the 200 meters and the 4×100 meters relay – in three Olympics.

Phelps closed out his Olympics career Friday with an impressive leg in the US’s win in the 4×100-meter medley relay.

“It might not be the color we wanted, but it’s a medal”, Zagunis said of Saturday’s bronze.

Rio 2016 director of venue management Gustavo Nascimento said the work should be done by Sunday morning, just a few hours before the start of synchronized swimming.

The 1,000 mark – a first for any country – was reached earlier Saturday, when the American women swimmers won the 4×100 meter medley relay.

“I will take every possible effort to protect my clean image as an athlete”, she said in a statement on Facebook.

Michael Phelps closed the Rio Olympics in the only way imaginable: golden. “I’m not going four more years and I’m standing by that”, he said.

Even that statistic seemed to pale against the irrepressible Phelps – and likewise Ryan Murphy’s leadoff backstroke leg, which set a new 100m world record of 51.85.

But Vollmer’s butterfly averted a crisis and Manuel brought them home in 3:53.13 nearly two seconds ahead of Australia with Denmark taking bronze.

“We are planning for some form of a street parade for him and I believe this is a good form of endorsement for what he has achieved”.

America grabbed the most gold during the St. Louis games in 1904, when it stacked up 79 medals.

This race was the final competition in the swimming category at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. After a victory, he’s much more likely to strike a “Look at me!” pose than to celebrate in a more traditionally sportsmanlike manner.

The final two individual golds of the games went to Pernille Blume of Denmark in the 50 freestyle, her country’s first swimming victory since 1948, and Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri in the grueling 1,500 free.
