Mookie Betts launches three homers in Red Sox win
Red Sox 1B Hanley Ramirez was placed on the bereavement list after Sunday’s game and LHP Roenis Elias, who pitched two one-run innings in relief, was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. A ball to left field that (Andrew) Benintendi is aggressive and overthrows, ends up with a man on second base – (Porcello) navigated his way through that first inning to keep any damage from happening.

Rick Porcello (16-3) became the first Red Sox pitcher in 70 years to open a season 12-0 at Fenway Park as Boston completed a three-game sweep of Arizona. Tomlin took a loss his last time out in Washington, going just four innings with eight hits and seven earned. Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve is again leading the league in hitting (.362) and has a career-high 19 homers.
Betts’ two-run homer in the first cleared the Green Monster and made it 2-0. Having already rubbed elbows with Ted Williams as the only Red Sox hitters ever with two three-homer games in a single season, Betts could join Williams, Tony Conigliaro and Nomar Garciaparra as the only players in franchise history to hit 30 homers before their age-24 season. “Just electric bat speed against a very good pitcher in (Zack) Greinke, so just one (heck) of a day for Mookie”. Not only has he not lost a game at home yet this year, he’s tied for the Major league lead in wins with 16. He gave up 11 in a start for Kansas City, against the Diamondbacks on June 10, 2005.
His only blemish was a solo homer to Michael Bourn in the fourth inning, and then he bounced back with three straight 1-2-3 frames to close his outing. And when he came to the plate in the sixth inning, the crowd was chanting “Let’s Go Mookie”. It was the fifth five-hit game of his career, which is the most ever in Red Sox history.
Red Sox: Bradley was in the lineup after getting Saturday off to rest and nurse a sore big toe. He had slugged three home runs and driven in nine runs so far in August.
Arizona (48-69) had won four in a row before being swept in the three-game series at Fenway.
Steven Wright will spend time on the disabled list after jamming his shoulder pinch-running in the Red Sox game against the Dodgers last Sunday. “We’ll work on that”. The Sox travel to Cleveland for a makeup game with the Indians on Monday, which begins an 11-game road trip.
