Despite heading into the event as the USA’s second-ranked player and a favorite to medal, Fowler looked lost during the first two rounds.

DeLaet, who has struggled with the yips in his short game so badly that he took six weeks off this summer, was in the first group to honor George Lyon, the Canadian who last won a gold medal in golf at the St. Louis Games.

“It depends”, Watson admitted Tuesday in Rio, as the US men’s Olympic golf team met the media in advance of Thursday’s first round.

This is a big deal for golf, which will benefit from worldwide exposure.

“It’s certainly not helpful, but now we are looking forward and concentrating on those players who are here”, International Golf Federation President Peter Dawson said.

Americans Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson withdrew from Olympic consideration – as did Australia’s Jason Day, Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen, to name a few – and some anxious how far the dominos would fall.

“Everybody’s catchable but that doesn’t mean he will be caught”, Watson said. All four planned to attend the swimming finals Tuesday night to cheer on golf nut Michael Phelps.

“This is where I want to be”, Fraser said, a remark that described both his presence and his standing atop the leaderboard after setting the course record of 63.

Five Americans were together on the Olympic Golf Course, checking out everything from the three types of sand in the bunkers to which side of the fairway allowed for the best angle to the green during a practice round Tuesday. “This week, you have 60 guys playing, and we are all winners”.

“I didn’t hit it a whole lot better than I did yesterday”, he added. “There may be some personal message that have been sent back and forth”. They appreciated me big time.

“Overall I would say disappointing”, Reed said.
