Kenya’s Paul Tanui made a spirited effort to outkick Farah in the last 400m but couldn’t hold on, settling for silver.

The 33-year-old already joined Haile Gebrselassie (Ethiopia), Kenenisa Bekele (Ethiopia) and Emil Zatopek (Czechoslovakia) as the only back-to-back winners in the 10,000 meters.

Earlier in the day the men’s eight won gold and the women’s eight won silver in the rowing. “I felt it in me, it was growing inside”, Manyonga said. “The twins from 2012 have got one of each and Rihanna’s missing one so I thought, ‘I can’t, I can’t'”.

“It was hard to pick myself up, but I believed in myself and the work I went through”, he said.

The Brit spent the first few laps of the race at the back letting the Ethiopians set the pace before moving his way up the pack.

Farah survived a trip and fall on lap ten of his 10 000 metre race to win the event for a second consecutive summer Games.

With the gold medal, Farah adds another gold to his historic career.

“What was going through my mind was my daughter, I promised her I was going to get her a medal, so I wasn’t going to let her down. I’m proud of Jamaica – just look at my hair”, she said, alluding to her brightly-dyed locks. Should he achieve the feat, he would become only the second man after Lasse Viren in 1976 to retain two Olympic distance titles.

Then, amid the mayhem of tens of thousands of fans shouting in disbelief, Farah’s thoughts turned to his family and how he still needed a gold to keep everyone happy.

However, Kamworor paid the price as he tailed off in the closing stages and eventually it was left to Tanui and Farah to battle it out. Galen Rupp finished 5th and will have the marathon as his only chance at claiming a medal in Rio.

He won double-gold in the 10,000 and 5,000 in London, and is on pace to do so again in Rio. American Tori Bowie lunged at the line for 10.83 and beat Fraser-Pryce by 0.03 seconds.

Anne Adams-King, chief executive officer at Welsh Cycling, added: “On behalf of Welsh Cycling, I would like to congratulate Elinor on her gold medal, alongside Laura Trott, Joanna Rowsell Shand and Katie Archibald”. I know 7.90m is not good, but it was just a matter of making finals.

Ennis-Hill, who came back from having a baby to win the world title past year, led overnight but Thiam sneaked into a five point lead after a personal best 6.58 metres with her final attempt in the morning long jump.
