Pakistan celebrates Independence Day

Pakistan celebrated its 70th Independence Day on Sunday with national zeal and fervor with the main function being held in Islamabad.

“We are shocked at the Quetta terrorist attack and we stand with the bereaved family”. He said every visible and invisible enemy will be chased and crushed, in order to establish durable peace in the country.

The President said menace of terrorism will be eliminated from the country by carrying out decisive actions with a renewed determination.

The day dawned with 31 gun salute in the federal and 21 gun salute in the provincial capitals, Radio Pakistan reported.

He, however, also touched upon the Kashmir issue and asked the people that they should not forget the people of Kashmir on the Independence Day.

The Acting High Commissioner of Pakistan to Brunei Darussalam, Ahmed Ali Sirohey, unfurled and hoisted the flag witnessed by Pakistani nationals now working and residing in Brunei.

The main event was the flag hoisting ceremony at the Convention Centre in Islamabad, which was performed by Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at the Jinnah Convention Centre. Excitement runs high in the country where people have decorated their homes with green and white flags of Pakistan.

Independence Day celebrations officially began with fireworks at parade ground Shakarparian in Islamabad after midnight.

Flag hoisting ceremonies were held in the provincial capitals, district headquarters, at public sector and private institutions. Change of guard ceremonies were held at the mausoleums of Quaide-e-Azam in Karachi and philosopher poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal in Lahore.

The ground and the surrounding areas were lit with thousands of colourful fireworks.
