Biles takes third gold medal with vault victory

Her remark about her patron saint was part of a list in an August 9 article about Biles posted by the magazine online with the headline, “25 Things You Don’t Know About Me”.

Biles was the bronze medalist on vault, a downgrade from the silver she’d won the previous two years.

After a solid score on her first vault, Hong went for the unicorn, but she couldn’t finish the third rotation and fell backwards upon landing.

Manuel was swimming her own 50-meter heat Friday morning and didn’t get to hear the words of her fellow trailblazers.

The 19-year-old Texan led the US women’s team to a record-margin victory in Tuesday’s team final and then followed that up two days later by outclassing the competition for gold in the individual all around.

Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky might not run into each other at the pool or uneven bars at the Rio Olympics, but they may run into each other at Mass. On Sunday, Biles added to her personal gold medal count, and the overall United States’ medal count, with a win in the vault finals. The gold also gives Biles 17 world championship or Olympic medals, the most ever by an American woman.

Let’s not shoot our whole load here, guys.

Most athletes – heck, most kids – dream of going to the Olympics at some point or another.

Until the point that Mustafina mounted the bars to start her routine, the U.S. were eyeing up a clean sweep of the women’s gymnastics golds, thanks to the irrepressible Biles.

Before Ledecky jumps in the water, she says a “Hail Mary”. You could see a whiff of disappointment on her face despite the score of 15.9, which was well more than any of her predecessors had scored. Despite the age gap, the siblings are close, and no one is more supportive of Biles than her sister and brothers. “It’s something I wanted so badly, so I just tried to keep a good mind going into vault”, she said.

“Five or six years ago, when I saw (Biles) for the first time, I knew she had this talent”, Karolyi said.

For the past year, the question wasn’t if she’d win gold in Rio but by how much.

‘This medal is not just for me, it’s for a whole bunch of people who have come before me and have been an inspiration to me, ‘ Manuel said. “I’m so proud of you @alyraisman Congratulations”. Manuel trains as hard as any world-class swimmer, yet spoke of the discomfort at the implied perception that acknowledging her groundbreaking achievement also singled her out. “It is part of who I am and I feel comfortable practicing my faith”.
