Two days after becoming the first African-American female swimmer to win an individual gold medal, the 20-year-old took the silver in the 50-meter freestyle Saturday at Aquatics Stadium with a time of 24.09 seconds.

The U.S.is the first nation to win 1,000 summer golds, the first of those coming in 1896.

After posting the top time in both the preliminaries and the semifinals, Blume came through again in the final Saturday on the final night of swimming.

The 22-year-old finished in 24.07 seconds, just two hundredths of a second ahead of Simone Manuel of the USA at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium on Saturday.

Manuel also won silver in the women’s 4x100M freestyle relay. She finished in 24.07.

Aliaksandra Herasimenia of Belarus finished the event in third place, earning a bronze medal for her troubles.

Of the 16 to go through to the semis, Bronte Campbell was fourth fastest, Cate seventh, and defending champion Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands was equal eighth along with Canada’s Chantal Van Landeghem.
