A responding Hatch officer – who had just left his assignment as a school resource officer – reportedly spoke to Officer Chavez on the phone and understood Chavez was about to make a stop in front of the convenience store. The officer, who had been on the force for two years, was killed Friday after pulling over two OH fugitives.

Police suspect 38-year-old Jesse Hanes was the shooter.
OH authorities had said that Hanes and Nelson, 36, were believed to have fled the state and were armed and extremely risky, warning that the two men have a violent criminal history. He was transported to an El Paso-area hospital where he remains as of Saturday morning. Nelson is being held on a fugitive warrant.
The two other suspect, who have not been identified, had fled on foot, but were arrested nearby, the station reports. “Hanes reached through the window and shot” the officer, police said, according to The Chicago Tribune.
The charges come after it was revealed Hanes, along with another suspect James Nelson II, are wanted for the fatal shooting of a 62-year-old OH man last month, according to the Chillicothe Gazette.
Authorities say Hanes killed 33-year-old Hatch Police Officer Jose Chavez.
Federal and local authorities plan to release more information about the fatal shooting of New Mexico police officer by a suspected fugitive from OH during a news conference Saturday.
The traffic stop occurred in the village of Hatch, which is near Las Cruces.
The owner of that auto was shot and wounded.
Deputies were able to stop Hanes by deflating his tires.
A man charged with “willful and deliberate first-degree murder” of a police officer in New Mexico is also wanted for murder in OH, authorities said. After about 25 minutes of high speed pursuit, the suspects pulled into a rest stop. His condition is unknown.
Nelson and Hanes, are accused of killing 62-year-old Theodore Timmons in July.
A Hatch police officer was shot Friday leading to a manhunt that ended with three suspects in custody. The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department said that’s when a passenger got out of the auto and fired at the officer.
The Ross County Sheriff’s Office in OH confirmed they received word from New Mexico officials that James Nelson II, 36, and Jesse Hanes, 38, were taken into custody on murder warrants out of Ross County, the Gazette reported.
