It was the third consecutive Independence Day speech for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Here are the major quotes from his speech.

Today on this special day, I convey my greetings to 125 crore Indians and the Indian community living overseas.

May this energy guide the nation to scale newer heights of progress in the years to come.

-“Reform, perform, transform, we have made efforts in every sector. We did not get an opportunity to die for the country but we have the opportunity to live for the country”, he added.

“I want to place two pictures before the world. and I say to the world, there are those who believe in humanity and others who glorify terrorists, please weigh these two scenes”, he said.

A nation which is divided because of reasons like caste and religion can not achieve great things. Yes there are problems, but we have to rise above and fight such anti-social elements. Only then we can make a robust and succesful India. The nuclear-armed neighbours have fought two wars since independence 69 years ago over the Muslim-majority region where the Line of Control, or de facto border, still runs roughly where the guns fell silent in 1948. “The time has come when Pakistan shall have to answer to the world for the atrocities committed by it against people in Balochistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir”, Modi had said.

Mr Modi said his government had been successful in bringing down retail inflation from double digits to 6 per cent, adding that he was working with the central bank to lower prices to 4 per cent, within a plus or minus 2 per cent band.

There was a time when the government was surrounded by allegations, but now the government is surrounded by expectations. The sharp exchanges over Kashmir has seen ties plummet after a seeming thaw in relations in December when Modi visited Pakistan -the first visit by an Indian prime minister in a decade-and met with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif.

The Prime Minister, in his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort, said his government was giving importance to the projects started by the previous government and had created a group to review the pending programmes.

While Pakistan observes its Independence Day on August 14, India celebrates the same a day after to commemorate the nation’s independence from the British Empire on Aug. 15, 1947.

“In the absence of effective and reliable links between the policy instruments controlled by the RBI and aggregate demand in the Indian economy the public may lack confidence that the RBI is able to deliver on its announced inflation target, making the target more hard (and costly) to achieve”, said the IMF working paper – ‘Monetary Transmission in Developing Countries: Evidence from India’ on Sunday.
