The statement makes clear that Carter’s cancer is widely spread but not where it originated, or even if that is known at this point.

He has remained active for the centre in recent years, making public appearances at its headquarters in Atlanta and travelling overseas, including a May election observation visit to Guyana cut short when Carter developed a bad cold.
Carter, who was the U.S. president from 1977 to 1981, spent 11 years in the United States Navy. He joined the staff of Emory University and in 1982 established the Carter Center to promote those issues. He assumed the role as global statesman, and somehow has helped defuse the nuclear tensions between north and South Korea.
He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
“This was a very wonderful day for me and to see my wife break the champagne on undoubtedly the finest and most formidable ship in the world is a great honor for me”, Carter previously said.
Mr. Carter did not say what kind of cancer he’s been diagnosed with or how far it has spread.
Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, deputy chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, said determining where the cancer originated can help select the treatment.
The first task is to determine whether the cancer is curable, “which is unlikely with metastatic cancer”, or if it is possible to meaningfully prolong the life through surgery or other treatments, Balducci said.

Carter recalled growing up in a home without running water or electricity, at a time when he said the daily wage was $1 for a man and 75 cents for a woman, and a loaf of bread cost 5 cents.
