Niantic Labs is leaving Google, but won’t be the ‘N’ in Alphabet

According to a post on Google+, Ingress has now become an independent company, and is moving forward to restructure its business alone. There’s no word on if this is a move brought on by the creation of Alphabet but Niantic will NOT be an Alphabet property.

As an independent company, Niantic Labs will look to build upon the success that it found with Ingress, a game which involves users traveling to different landmarks around the world. In an email to customers, Niantic has stated that players will be opt out of this. But for today at least, Niantic Labs is treating your personal data with kiddie gloves, and it has already achieved one of its lofty goals.

The split, which is unusual for Google, means that Niantic Labs won’t be part of Alphabet, the new holding company that is expected to be formed later this year to include Google and other parts of the company. This is more or less a confirmation that it could manage its finances independently and that there will not be any need for the parent company to fund it. However, there is no clarity as to what the shareholders will get by spinning out Niantic.

Niantic Labs announced that they’ll be taking their unique mixture of exploration and excitement for more number of audiences, and start working with some of their unbelievable new alliances joining Google as backers, and collaborators.

Ingress has been a bit of a phenomenon in Android gaming. Since then, the game has attracted thousands of loyal players, over twelve million downloads, and the company is hard at work on a more story-driven augmented reality title, Endgame, which will include books and a film tie-in. It’s even big enough to spawn accessories made just keeping you up and running since the game is so hard on batteries.
