Authorities have named the man they say is responsible for shooting and killing an Eastman, Ga. police officer Saturday night.

CBS reports Smith was shot after he encountered the suspect and exited his patrol auto.

Police say Smith returned fire, but the suspect fled the scene.

Bureau Special Agent in Charge Scott Whitley said that Smith had a conversation with the alleged gunman while standing outside of his patrol vehicle. Smith would have turned 31 on Monday, she said.

Anyone with any information on the shooting can call the GBI Eastman office at 478-374-6988.

A small motorcade carrying Smith’s body came through Macon on Interstate 16 and Interstate 75 about noon Sunday.

Smith is the second officer in Georgia to be fatally shot in the line of duty this year.

The man stabbed the officer in the face before another officer shot the suspect once in the abdomen, police said. Both were arrested, and the injured teenager was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Eight people remain unaccounted for, including two children, the Montgomery County Police Department said. Two 15-year-old suspects were arrested after exchanging gunfire.

Davis and two other Marietta officers were responding to a vehicle break-in call outside The Gallery Apartments when two suspects were spotted in a auto in the area at 4:24 a.m. One volunteer picked up a bullet casing and handed it to police.
