The police officer who was shot dead Friday in Hatch, New Mexico, was Jose Chavez, according to the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office.
The almost four-hour episode started to unfold when Chavez pulled over a gray Lexus on Franklin Street at 3:41 p.m., according to Kelly Jameson, spokeswoman for the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office.
The department says deputies will respond to calls in Hatch while local officers mourn the killing of 33-year-old Jose Chavez. However, a newspaper in OH has linked two OH fugitives to Friday’s shooting.
The 38-year-old driver was in stable condition Saturday, police said.
Hanes, 38, is also wanted on a murder charge in OH, his last known address, Jameson said. Nelson is being held on a fugitive warrant.
However, the Doña Ana County authorities have yet to identify the two people arrested with Hanes.
A Hatch police officer died Friday evening after being shot during a traffic stop.
Nelson was found a short time later and taken into custody.
In the auto with Hanes was James Nelson, 36, who is also wanted in OH on suspicion of murder and is being held on a fugitive warrant.
Witnesses say they heard around six shots when the Hatch police officer was shot while making a traffic stop.
Federal and local authorities plan to release more information about the fatal shooting of New Mexico police officer by a suspected fugitive from OH during a news conference Saturday.
Dona Ana County authorities say a Hatch police officer has died after being shot during a traffic stop on Friday.
The two other suspects were captured before 7 p.m.in the 2400 block of Rincon.
Hanes, who was driving a luxury auto with two passengers, then fled and allegedly carjacked a man at a rest stop before shooting him in the stomach.
“The suspect was unable to control that vehicle, and it crashed into a pile of wood and came to rest”, she said.
An Ohio fugitive wanted for murder has been arrested in the fatal shooting death of a New Mexico police officer.
A 36-year-old man who reportedly had an outstanding warrant for aggravated murder in OH has been arrested and charged in the shooting death of Hatch Police Officer Jose Chavez.
The Lexus was spotted by witnesses a short time later at a rest stop, where Hanes is accused of demanding auto keys from a driver before shooting him in the torso.
Arthur Cox, a senior at New Mexico State University, said he was driving south on I-25, heading to Las Cruces, when he spotted the gray Lexus driving erratically around 3:45 p.m. near mile maker 37.
Sheriff’s deputies followed the Cruze, using a tire-deflating gadget to stop the auto.
The shooter and his two passengers fled the scene, prompting a high-speech chase.
