Bronze went to France in 43.143 seconds. “It’s really odd”, Kenny said. “We’ve been going quite well in training so we kind of had a rough idea of what we could do”. We had a rough idea what we could do.

The squad were on the podium as the first Olympic rugby medals in 92 years were handed out. “It might take a few days to settle in, although I’ve got another race to focus on first”.

Led off by Philip Hindes, the British trio were behind until the penultimate time split following a sensational opening lap by New Zealand’s Ethan Mitchell. “We went to dinner, went to bed, woke up and had breakfast and came here”.

Cavendish was sixth in the event at March’s Track World Championships, but showed strong enough form to suggest the gold he is so eager to claim is not out of his reach.

Kenny won the selection nod ahead of Sir Chris Hoy four years ago when the competition was limited to one rider per nation and claimed gold.

“We get a chance to win the worlds every single year and we get a chance to win the Olympics every four”.

“We’re team-mates, we’ve raced each other a thousand times, what we do at the track has no bearing on anything at home”.

Jason Kenny has won as many gold medals as British Olympic legends Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Bradley Wiggins.

New Zealand’s only track cycling Olympic gold remains Sarah Ulmer’s individual pursuit victory in Athens in 2004. Skinner was the man Britain’s coaches stuck with, seeing potential in the Scot which has now been realised.

It was Trott’s third Olympic gold as she became the British female with the most Olympic titles, above cyclist Victoria Pendleton, swimmer Rebecca Adlington and athlete Dame Kelly Holmes.

He did risk a smile though and the sheer joy at having taken another gold was written large over his face but there is a team feeling to this triumph for Kenny.

Coach Rod Ellingworth said: “He’s disappointed, but he’s right where we want him to be”.

“I am flattered by all the comparisons but it is best to make a name for myself”. It was just incredible.

And Callum said he hopes his medal win will inspire others with better facilities in the pipeline in Scotland.

There was no such issue this time around in a supreme victory.

Laugher said: “So we took on the English weather with the wind and the rain and the cloudiness but we embraced it”.

“In the past we have been kind of hanging on and it’s been grim to be in the team”.

James, the 2013 world keirin champion, edged out South Korea’s Lee Hye-Jin by 0.017 seconds.

They said: “Well done to @CallumSkinner Olympic Gold medal”.

Meanwhile, Team GB are guaranteed at least a silver in the men’s rugby sevens after qualifying for the final against Fiji. She also won sprint gold in Beijing four years earlier. That would be the same as Hoy’s. “I like flying under the radar a little bit and getting on with what I like doing which is racing”. The Olympics are the biggest race and it’s great if you can win.

“It’s a bit lonely winning on your own to be honest”.

“He could end up with 12 gold medals by the next two Olympiads”, Wiggins pointed out.
