Smith was killed Saturday when police say he ran from a vehicle during a traffic stop.
After the flames died down and people left, police tweeted around 3:30 a.m. that police were “restoring order”. Shortly after stopping the suspects, both occupants fled from the auto on foot.
Shortly after the shooting, Milwaukee Police Assistant Chief Bill Jessup said at the scene that it wasn’t immediately clear whether the suspect pointed the gun or shot at the officer. The suspect was carrying a handgun taken in a March burglary in Waukesha.
“He did not drop his gun”.
Police have not identified the man, only saying that he was a 23-year-old Milwaukee man.
Another sister, 24-year-old Kimberly Neal, told an Associated Press reporter that she wants prosecutors to file charges against the police officer who shot her brother. The officer was not injured.
“It is also important for citizens to know that Wisconsin is the first state in the nation to have a law requiring an independent investigation anytime there is a shooting by a law enforcement officer that leads to a death”, Walker said Sunday in a statement, announcing his decision.
