Mejia’s minor league hitting streak ends at 50

Mejia’s streak briefly came to an end Saturday night after going 0 for 4 with a walk and a strikeout. The longest minor league hit streak of all-time belongs to Joe Wilhoit, who notably reached 69 straight games back in 1919. The video review showed that the ball was struck far enough away from the backhand of the third baseman [Gerson Montilla] and hit with enough force and topspin to prevent Montilla from making the play with ordinary effort. Montilla didn’t appear to have made any contact with the ball. However, the official scorer awarded Mejia with a hit post-game after a play that was initially ruled an error was changed to a double.

Anyway, the 20-year-old Mejia hit.386/.414/.599 with 78 hits, 15 doubles, eight homers, 10 walks, and only 29 strikeouts in 215 plate appearances during his 50-game hitting streak.

MLB.com ranked Mejia as the fourth best prospect in the Indians’ system and the 95th best prospect in all of baseball in their recently released midseason top 100 prospects list. Mejia was nearly traded to the Brewers last month but the deal was vetoed by Jonathan Lucroy. On the other hand, he also appeared in 60 games for Full-Season Single-A Lake County while batting.347 with seven home runs, 51 RBI and a.384 on-base percentage.
