Michael Phelps captured his 20th Olympic gold medal in devastating fashion on Tuesday, sealing victory with a kiss, before adding a staggering 21st before the night was over.
He was back at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium on Wednesday, getting started on his bid to win the 200-meter individual medley for the fourth straight time. To watch on your phone or tablet, use the NBC Sports App, which can be downloaded from the Apple App Store, Google Play, and the Windows Store.
‘It hurt a little bit, but with a good rest this afternoon think I’ll be fine, ‘ he said.
“That’s why he brings out the best in me and hopefully I do the exact same for him”. He’s the toughest competitor I’ve ever gone up against.
“We’ll hang out because swimming doesn’t dictate our friendship”, Lochte said.
Lochte and Phelps’ unique relationship has been closely followed by sports fans for more than a decade, with the two first competing against each other on the worldwide stage during the 2004 Olympic games in Athens.
Ledecky seeks her fourth gold medal in Rio, which would tie her with Amy Van Dyken (1996) and Missy Franklin (2012) as the only American female athletes to win that many in a single Olympics.
So it was unusual to see him, after what he insists was his final individual race as an Olympian, crowding onto a medal stand with two other swimmers.
On the sixth night of swimming in Rio de Janeiro, the Campbell sisters seek the same golden prize in the women’s 100 freestyle.
“I’m happy”, Phelps said.
World record-holder Cate Campbell of Australia led the way into the semi-finals of the women’s 100m freestyle in an Olympic record of 52.78.
Both also took home gold medals after being a part of the winning 4×200 free relay team, along with fellow teammates Conor Dwyer and Townley Haas. Simone Manuel of the United States took the second spot, followed by Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden and defending Olympic champion Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands.
