Two of the German hopefuls, buoyed by their gold in the team event in Rio last week, came closest to challenging Dujardin’s tally.

In what is likely to be Dujardin and Valegro’s final competition together, the British rider was in tears as she finished her routine before watching on as her score remained unbeaten as she secured Olympic gold.

She also won silver in the team dressage earlier in the Games.

After the display, she told the BBC: “For once in my life I’m a little bit speechless”.

“I didn’t feel pressure in London, however as defending champion here I did feel a huge amount of expectation and pressure”, she said as he partnership with Valegro came to an end. “I could be greedy and push him further but he’s done it all and it’s best to go out on top and for people to remember him as he was today”. “I’m so happy”, she enthused.
