Michael Phelps’ mom still wants him to race in Tokyo

As Nathan Adrian touched the wall to finish off the victory, Phelps gathered the other relay swimmers, Ryan Murphy and Cody Miller, in his arms. One night after his only setback of the games, an upset loss to Joseph Schooling in the 100 fly, Phelps was back on top.

At age 31, he leaves Rio with five golds and a silver.

“I’m not even looking”, Bowman said. “I’m in the best place possible with everything that’s going on in my life”.

Clearly exhausted, he shared every victory with the raucous crowd and was especially emotional whenever he caught sight of fiancée Nicole and infant son Boomer in the stands.

Phelps is eager to spend a lot more time with them.

And there was even an Olympics love story.

“He’s always had an edge, which is awesome”, Busch said of Phelps.

While Phelps is preparing to venture out into a post-swimming career, Murphy will head back to school on August 22, when UC Berkeley kicks off its Fall Semester, and complete his remaining 29 units for his degree in business administration. After all, he said the same thing after the 2012 London Games. “This is it. I said it before, but you guys can say, this is the last time”.

Phelps also plans to amp up in his foundation, which aims to involve more children in swimming.

“These games really showed his growth”, teammate Anthony Ervin said. I think he is going to continue to try to grow that.

She quickly realized how old that made Phelps seem. “Other people respect that”. New Zealand’s Mahe Drysdale and Croatia’s Damir Martin crossed the finish line in the men’s single sculls side by side, not knowing which one of them was the new Olympic champion. But this time around he started reaching out, reaching out to other people, bringing them closer, letting that gap be bridged.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 14 (UPI) – Phelps out.

“I walked to the pool tonight and I nearly felt myself starting to cry – the last warm-up, the last time putting on a suit, the last time walking out in front of thousands of people representing my country”, Phelps, 31, said of his final swim in his fifth Olympic Games. “I felt very alone at the end”.

Elaine Thompson of Jamaica won the women’s 100-meter title in 10.71 seconds, ending fellow Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce’s bid to win the event for a third straight Olympics.

Phelps dove into the pool in second place. There were the two DUI arrests, the second of those just two years ago. Britain held on for silver, with Australia nabbing bronze.

The hullabaloo over the Phelps’s farewell overshadowed the achievement of the women’s 4x100m medley relayers as they captured their country’s 1,000th Olympic medal, according to the United States Olympic committee. Following a history-making week in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Michael Phelps has announced that he’s officially retiring.

“1,000 gold medals for the United States is a nice number”.

Since he first took the Olympic plunge at the 2000 Sydney Games he has had an ambition to take swimming into the mainstream and there is no doubt the sport has enjoyed a much higher profile during his tenure as its leading figure.

The U.S. women have not won an Olympic field hockey medal since taking bronze in 1984.

The U.S. also won 33 medals at Sydney in 2000.
