It’s a ‘Sausage Party’ party at box office

After its $13 million Friday earnings, the Warner Bros. supervillain film is taking aim at a second week in the $46 million range on 4,255 screens.

Seemingly impacted by the poor reviews, “Suicide Squad” suffered a substantial 67% weekend-to-weekend drop at the United States box office.

The $175 million “Suicide Squad” has grossed a domestic total of $222.9 million and worldwide total of $242.5 million to date.

Final numbers are going to be released on Monday.

“We’re going to come out of this having made money”, said Dave Hollis, Disney’s distribution chief. The studio secured subsidies from New Zealand, where the film was made, according to a government statement.

“Pete’s Dragon” is the latest remake of a classic Walt Disney Co. property. The budget was $65 million – pretty light for such a CGI-laden movie – and it should be able to turn a solid profit once all grosses are counted in.

Pete’s Dragon’s audience breakdown was very similar to BFG’s, playing 47% male vs 53% female, though it did skew a little younger as 33% of the audience was 12 and under, a six percent jump compared to BFG. Starring Meryl Streep as a 1940s NY socialite with dreams of being an opera singer, the dramedy managed an A-minus Cinemascore and 86% at Rotten Tomatoes. Also critically acclaimed, time will tell if business will stay strong for Pete’s Dragon.

Universal’s Jason Bourne followed with an estimated $13.6M falling 39% and bumped its domestic cume up to $126.8M. The action movie, a part of a franchise from the studio, has also grossed $119.4 million internationally for a worldwide gross topping $246 million.

Our number one film of the weekend is Suicide Squad, but this weekend’s race for number one wasn’t even supposed to be close. Among holdover territories, the film nabbed US$6.7 million in Brazil, US$5.5 million in the United Kingdom, US$4.4 million in Australia, US$4.3 million in Mexico, and US$4.3 million in Russian Federation. The projected weekend earnings for this film, starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant, is somewhere between $6 million and $7 million. Competition over the coming weeks will not be too harsh.

At the specialty box office, WWII thriller Anthropoid earned an estimated $1.2 million from just under 500 theaters and the Jeff Bridges-Chris Pine bank heist Western Hell or High Water took in $592,000 from just 32 locations for an eye-popping $18,500 per-theater average.
