Twitter and the NFL have new surprises in store for upcoming season

Starting this season, the NFL will create content specifically for Twitter, like in-game highlights, breaking news and analysis, top plays, custom game recaps, infographics, behind-the-scenes content, and relevant archived video.

Get ready for an explosion of NFL highlights and other content to bombard your Twitter timeline this season and beyond. If you are a Twitter user, you’re going to be getting plenty during the next two NFL seasons.

The issue of more NFL content being shared through Twitter will enable the microblogging company to keep its users more engaged with fresh materials.

Twitter shares have gone through a remarkable rise and fall since, shedding about nearly two thirds of its value since hitting an intraday high above $74 per share in December 2013.

The move could also be a significant boost for Twitter.

In addition to increasing the visibility of NFL content on Twitter, the deal is expected to help brand advertisers better align their content with users.

Glenn Brown, the Twitter sales exec in charge of the company’s deals with content companies, won’t comment directly on its Project Lightning plans.

The NFL has since inked a deal with social networking giant Facebook, the Wall Street Journal reported.

“We are very excited to partner with Twitter in a more comprehensive way”, Vishal Shah, Vice President of Media Strategy & Business Development, said.

Twitter is now banking on the NFL’s vast popularity to get users to check into its 140-character universe more frequently and heed the ads that come with the content. The surge was largely a result of an insider purchase of Twitter’s shares. Of course, the use of Periscope would likely be limited to members of the NFL’s social media team.

Separately on Monday, Twitter co-founder and interim CEO Jack Dorsey disclosed he has bumped up his investment in Twitter, stoking speculation that the 38-year-old tech tycoon will become the floundering company’s permanent CEO.

The stock price of Twitter increased more than 4% to $28.16 per share at the time of this writing around 11:47 AM in New York.
