Thomas now faces capital murder charges in the two deaths after police found their bodies under the home, like she said. Thomas said she rolled the children under the neighbor’s house and returned to her home to pack because she planned to leave the house, according to court documents. (Both children’s names have been spelled differently in various news reports; police would not confirm the spellings to The Huffington Post.) Thomas also has a 12-year-old son who has not been harmed, police told local media. She told investigators she tried to use her use her hands and a piece of wood to dig a hole, but said the hole was not big enough and the bodies could still be seen.

According to the Chronicle, Child Protective Services has launched an investigation, and the Office of Child Safety will conduct a “top-to-bottom review”, according to Tejal Patel, a spokesperson for Child Protective Services.

The friend had come upon Thomas throwing out garbage in a vacant lot across from her Houston home, where she allegedly told him she needed immediate help moving.

As the man was helping her with her things, Thomas said something so unbelievable, the man who was helping her initially thought that was telling a very bad joke. “Why would anyone do this to their kids?” the children’s aunt told KHOU.

“I’m just a phone call away”, she said.

Authorities claim in court documents that Thomas told them later that night, she wrapped the kids bodies in bed sheets and placed them in a black trash can behind the house.

“She was so matter of fact about it he didn’t think she was serious”.

Police returned to the scene and located the bodies of the victims, 7-year-old Oraynn and 5-year-old Kayana, under a neighbor’s home. He says she then repeated that she had killed them. He then drove the woman to a nearby police precinct and flagged down an officer, Smith said.

“I never would have thought she would do that”. Smith said. He said police had been to the home before but for “nothing major”. “While you were there, how did you feel drowning your kids?” “I would have come and got these kids”. “You felt something, you felt some kind of guilt, something told you this is not right, but you kept doing it?” Smith cried. She said the children’s father is incarcerated and did not yet know what had happened.
