“There are no injuries”, a Port Authority police statement said.
Police said they responded to unconfirmed reports of shots fired at Terminal 8 at 9.30pm, followed by a second report of shots fired at 10.15 at Terminal 1. “There are no arrests, there is no confirmation of shots fired”, the Port Authority said in a statement. The Van Wyck Expressway approaching the airport was shut down.
Police say they’ve found no evidence that any gunshots were fired at the airport. Police went floor-to-floor to clear the airport and ensure there was nothing to be found, a source said.
A ground stop was issued due to “security”, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) command system website.
According to Pix 11, multiple calls reporting a shooting in Terminal 8 came in around 9.30 pm.
Video and photos posted on social media showed hundreds of people streaming out of Terminal 8.
Cheering and banging while people watched the Olympics may have been mistaken for the sound of shots, one official said.
Ultimately, she was only able to leave the airport five hours after her plane landed following a flight from Frankfurt.
Journalist Dan Archer also posted that security checkpoint gates had been closed and armed police were patrolling the terminal.
New York Police Department officers were called in to help with the investigation. It also said that travellers should contact their carriers.
