According to Edward Flynn, the Milwaukee police chief, Smith ran to a fenced area and turned to the officer while holding a gun. The officer’s identity has not been released.
Police say Smith had been arrested 13 times before.
The damage was not as extensive as the protests from the previous night.
Officers also recorded 30 ShotSpotter activations, which detect gunshots and the locations where the shots were fired. One civilian was shot and was taken to the hospital with the aid of an armored vehicle.
Another officer’s “riot helmet received a graze wound to the back of it, probably from a firearm”, Mr Flynn said, adding that the officer had not suffered serious injuries.
The National Guard, which is under the dual control of the federal and state governments, was deployed in Ferguson, Missouri, in August 2014 after several nights of rioting over the police killing of an unarmed black man. The police Chief said the video footage from the officer’s body cam showed Smith turning toward him with a gun. The men fled the vehicle and the officers followed, shooting Smith in the arm and chest when he failed to put his gun down. His gun was loaded with 23 rounds, more than the officer was carrying.
Authorities said Monday that the man was shot during a second night of unrest in the Sherman Park neighborhood on Milwaukee’s north side.
Walker sought to tamp down tension in the city as the curfew approached, told Milwaukeeans at a late-afternoon news conference that the troops are “not out on the streets. but rather here as a resource”.
A Milwaukee Police Officer was taken to a hospital after a rock broke a windshield of a squad.
The National Guard had been activated and put on standby Sunday. “And no matter what the circumstances are, his family has to be hurting”. After a black man who was mentally disabled, Dontre Hamilton was shot to death by a white officer. Protestors torched six businesses and 17 people were arrested on Saturday night, but calm was restored during the day Sunday as volunteers gathered to clean up the streets.
The protests began Saturday, a few hours after officers shot and killed Sylville Smith, a 23-year-old black man, who was armed and running from police.
This summer, the nation has also remained on edge after police shot and killed black men in Minnesota and Louisiana, followed quickly by shooting attacks that killed officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge.
Ultimately, the charge was dismissed when the witness recanted and failed to appear in court, according to the newspaper. Flynn said the man “doesn’t seem to be in medical danger”.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
