Police tweeted three locations where they said shots were fired. One victim was shot and was rushed to the hospital during the protest and a police officer was also injured after a rock crashed through a squad vehicle windshield, according to Milwaukee police. Some cars were set on fire, but there was no repeat of the widespread destruction of property that occurred Saturday night.
At a news conference Monday, Mayor Tom Barrett said those outsiders are trying to damage a great neighborhood, where he lived for 11 years. Police said things had quieted down by 1 a.m.
“This is not the place where you go to gawk, this is not the place where you go to take pictures”, he said. “This is not the place where you go to drive your auto around”.
The problems began Saturday afternoon after a black police officer shot and killed a black man after a traffic stop. Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker declared a state of emergency Sunday, and activated the state’s National Guard, though police said they did not need the extra help to suppress the 100 or so protesters who remained into early Monday morning.
A vigil was held on Sunday night on Milwaukee’s Northeast side, reports WDJT. Other officers can be seen carrying the injured officer to safety.
An unspecified projectile was thrown at another officer, who was protected by a helmet, according to police. The Wisconsin Justice Department is reviewing the shooting. I do, however, hope people will give law enforcement the respect they deserve for working so hard to keep us safe.
Milwaukee Police Chief Edward A. Flynn said, “I don’t think there’s anybody in the country that’s released a body worn camera of an officer-involved shooting in 24 hours or 36 hours”. They described the man as a suspect, but didn’t say what led to the traffic stop.
“My son is gone due to the police killing my son”, Smith’s mother, Marilyn Haynes, told the Journal Sentinel. Smith was accused in a shooting past year and charged with recklessly endangering safety, a felony. Violent mobs chased, targeted and attacked white people, although it was later learned that it was, in fact, a black officer who shot Smith.
Police took to social media to keep the public updated during the overnight protests.
Milwaukee is moving up its curfew for teenagers following violence on the city’s north side after the police-involved shooting of a black man.

Milwaukee has become the latest American city to be gripped by violence in response to police killings of black men in places such as Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014 and Baltimore a year ago.
