Phelps Writes yet More History With Individual Medley Win

Even after a grueling night at the pool, Michael Phelps cruised through the preliminaries of the 200-meter individual medley Wednesday afternoon. Thirteen of his golds have come in individual races, the rest in relays. “I can definitely say that because I guarantee he will be there”.

This long-awaited showdown is expected to be the last meeting between Phelps and Lochte, who are 31 and 32 years old, respectively.

“That hurt a lot.my body is in pain, my legs are hurting, I’m exhausted”.

Rio de Janeiro – Michael Phelps waggled four fingers, recognizing another historic achievement.

“Of course I wanted gold like any other athlete, especially at the Olympics, and it was so close”, Efimova said.

“The history him and I have had with one another, it’s something special and something I’ve never had in another competitor of mine”, Phelps said. At the medal ceremony he swayed slightly and breathed deeply, his eyes moist, as he listened to the US anthem. Then he and mom will have Phelps all to themselves.

There was little time to savour the moment, however, as he raced back off the pool deck to get ready for the semi-finals of the 100m butterfly, which he also has the chance to win for a fourth successive Games.

Brazil’s Thiago Perreira was third quickest in 1:57.11.

“I honestly don’t think this is going to be his last Olympics”, Lochte told the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday.

This time, Lochte said he had didn’t have inside knowledge about Phelps’ plans moving forward.

FIJI GOLD: It was a joy to watch the Pacific Island nation of Fiji win its first Olympic medal, striking gold by routing Britain in the rugby sevens final, and a great example of the benefits to searching beyond NBC’s prime-time coverage to see all that is being offered.

Leading at the midway point, Lochte faded to fifth – almost 3 seconds behind the victor.
