A man suspected of fatally shooting a Georgia police officer was caught in Florida, officials confirmed to ABC News.

Deeds was arrested around 1:30 am during a traffic stop conducted by the Nassau County, FL, Sheriff’s Office on United States 1. Nassau deputies spotted a vehicle matching that description about 1 a.m. south on USA 1 in Hilliard. Deputies in Nassau County, Florida, arrested Deeds early Monday during a traffic stop in which they found him hiding in the trunk of his sister’s vehicle.

Eastman Patrol Officer Tim Smith was fatally shot about 9:30 p.m. Saturday in a residential area of the city located about 60 miles southeast of Macon, Georgia Bureau of Investigations spokesman Scott Drbutton said. He reportedly encountered Deeds in a residential area of Eastman, exited his patrol vehicle and was shot. Smith joined the Eastman Police Department in February 2011 after following his father’s footsteps to become an officer. “It’s very sad when that happens, but it’s certainly a good day when we can find the individual that did it and arrest them”.

Deeds had “bounced around” from town to town, he said, and even had ties to the Atlanta area.

Davis and the two other officers will be placed on administrative leave as per policy standards.

Whitley said Smith was able to radio in that he had been shot.

Further details about the suspect’s arrest weren’t available.

Officer Smith managed to return fire, but the shooter got away.

A reward of $15,000 was offered leading to the arrest of Deeds.

All three appeared in Nassau County court Monday morning and waived extradition. The Georgia police officer was officially pronounced dead a short time after the shooting at a local hospital. Monday would have been his 31st birthday.
