Jessica Ennis-Hill and Katarina Johnson-Thompson got their bids for Olympic heptathlon gold off to flying starts in Rio on Friday.
“It is a silver medal and I am back on the podium which is great”. For Johnson-Thompson, it would be disastrous if by the end of her outdoor career she has failed to have turned her enormous potential into reality. Until Saturday night, however, her personal best was 6,508 points – enough to put in the mix for a bronze, some thought, but no one was tipping her for gold. The timetable and sleeping didn’t help for everyone not just me.

“I’m definitely moving to that stage of my life where things are changing”.
In their history, Puerto Rico have only managed to claim eight Olympic medals – and never gold. I have just tried to stay focused on getting here and competing but it does creep into my mind, thinking this is possibly my last competition and that I might not do this event again or that one. “So it’s a nice position to be in and I’m looking forward to the future”.
At first she called them “happy tears” because it’s another medal, but then acknowledged how hard it was going to be to give up and just how close she was to doing that.
The Yorkshire athlete led after day one but was short of the distance she would have been hoping for in the long jump on the resumptipon on Saturday, as Thiam moved into the lead.
She went into the final event, the 800m, needing to run 9.47 seconds quicker than Thiam to make up a deficit of 142 points.
But, if Jessica Ennis-Hill does decide to retire, we’ll always remember her as one of the great athletes.
“You seen Rocky Balboa?” he asked her.
“I am really pleased with the hurdles and the high jump”. To put her performance into perspective, it was more than 100 points in excess of her winning total in last year’s World Championships. “It was a unique run-up to the Games. being the poster girl and having all that kind of pressure and expectation, but it was an incredible journey”. “It’s celebrations not commiserations, ‘ she said”.

Ennis-Hill performed well – indeed her score was her best since London 2012, since which she has given birth to her now two-year-old son Reggie.
