Army chief approves 7 death sentences over Peshawar school attack

Pakistan’s army has announced the death penalty for six militants for their involvement in the deadly school attack in Peshawar.

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif has confirmed the death sentences of seven hardcore terrorists of which six were involved in Army Public School attack last year, said Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). An army statement released on Thursday said another militant was sentenced to life in prison.

The attack on the army-run school in Peshawar, in which almost all the victims were schoolchildren, shocked Pakistanis and led the country to lift a moratorium on executions. 151 people including 125 children were killed when terrorists attacked the Army Public School in Peshawar on December 16, 2014.

The statement also said that convicts were provided with a fair trial by following all legal formalities and offering them legal support and defence counsels.

Another terrorist was awarded a lifetime imprisonment for attacking Rangers’s personnel in Karachi. He was tried on three charges and awarded death sentence.

He was also involved in abetting deaths of two Colonels and a civilian Director of National Development Complex (NDC). He was found involved in using Improvised Explosive Devices at the residence of 2 Civilians and transporting arms and ammunition. He was tried on four charges and awarded imprisonment for life.

Whereas, Civilian Taj Muhammad alias Rizwan S/O Altaf Khan was an active member of CivilianMuhammad Farhan alias Ali alias Abbas alias AijazQadri was an active member of Jaish-e-Muhammad.

In a separate attack three Rangers officials were murdered at Safoora Chowrangi in Karachi.
