Jordan’s King Abdullah Promises to Defend Al-Aqsa From Jewish “Extremists”

The king accused Israel of attempting to “violate the sanctity and compromise Al-Aqsa mosque”, and added, “Our responsibility towards the Muslim holy places in Jerusalem is our top priority in the global arena, and we use all means necessary to defend Al-Aqsa mosque” in an interview published Monday by the Jordanian Ad-Dustour daily.

The king accused Israel of attempting to “violate the sanctity and compromise al-Aksa Mosque”, and added that, “our responsibility towards the Muslim holy places in Yerushalayim is our top priority in the global arena, and we use all means necessary to defend al-Aksa Mosque”. Seven Jewish worshipers were detained for violating visitor rules.

He also warned that if such violations continue, a religious war would erupt in the region, a possibility His Majesty King Abdullah warned against repeatedly. Then, Muslim prayers stood against them and subsequently many were arrested and wounded by the Israeli police for that.

Jordan’s King Abdullah said in an interview with Jordanian newspaper Ad-Dustour Monday that he vowed to combat “repeated violations and attacks carried out by Israel and extremist groups” at the Temple Mount.

Israeli police on Sunday said Muslims had gathered around two Jews who were being expelled from the compound and began yelling at them. “We will also fulfill our duty as guardians of the holy sites in Jerusalem for Islam and Christianity against the Israeli violations”.

Tal Aviv- Sunday’s attacks on Al-Aqsa mosque on the memorial of Tisha B’Av heightened the level of tension in Eastern Jerusalem.

According to a peace deal with Israel in 1994, Jordan has the right to oversee Islamic and Christian sites in Jerusalem.

The anger of Palestinian residents of Jerusalem has increased in the last three years after the Israeli authorities allowed increasing numbers of Jewish settlers to storm the Al-Aqsa mosque.
