The David Ayer film also led the global box office again, bringing in $58.7 million from 62 markets.

But it was enough to put it above two new releases – R-rated comedy Sausage Party and family fantasy Pete’s Dragon. Sausage Party reportedly cost just $19 million to make.

“Pete’s Dragon”, a live-action re-imagining of the 1977 Disney film, garnered $21.5 million.

Both Jason Bourne (No. 4) and Star Trek Beyond (No. 7) continue to their respective franchises, but both are having a hard time making a mint domestically. Critics liked the film (a strong 82% on Rotten Tomatoes) and while audiences were more lukewarm to it (B CinemaScore), it is on a nice road to profitability.

The 67.3% drop for this Task Force X adventure is just slightly lower than the second-weekend drop for this spring’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Holding to the No. 1 spot – but not by much – is “Suicide Squad”, bringing in an estimated $43 million.

The film, based on the real-life story of a NY heiress who bought a career as an opera star only to be ridiculed, grossed an estimated $2 million-plus on Friday for a projected opening in the $6 million-$7 million range.

Compared to projections, Sausage Party opened ahead of my $23M forecast while Pete’s Dragon was close to my $19M prediction. It might not reach the same heights as Zootopia, The Secret Life of Pets, or Finding Dory.

The Kevin Spacey family comedy Nine Lives dropped 44% to an estimated $3.5M upping its sum to a weak $13.6M for EuropaCorp. At this point the film is still on par for about $350 million to $360 million as a final domestic take.

The only other major movie out this week, Florence Foster Jenkins, earned $6.6 million.

Meryl Streep’s latest offering, Florence Foster Jenkins, made a quiet debut in eighth place with $6.5 million. The cast also includes Jai Courtney (“Insurgent”), Jay Hernandez (“Takers”), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (“Thor: The Dark World”), Ike Barinholtz (“Neighbors“), Scott Eastwood (“Fury”), Cara Delevingne (“Paper Towns”), Adam Beach (“Cowboys & Aliens”), and Karen Fukuhara in her feature film debut.
