Police say the slaying was Des Moines’ ninth homicide this year.
Des Moines Police Department rules say chasing a suspect is warranted when an officer believes the suspect’s actions represent a threat to the public.
Darnell Browder, 34, of Des Moines was in fair condition at Mercy Medical Center Monday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Des Moines Police say the chase started shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday when an officer spotted a vehicle without license plates.
The vehicle’s driver, later identified as Browder, pulled into a Hy-Vee parking lot and then drove away, accelerating to high speeds in attempt to flee from the officer, police said.

Police called the death suspicious, but released few details of the case on Sunday. Police said the pursuit lasted around one minute. Officers found the man’s body inside the home. Online court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could be contacted to comment on his behalf. For now, no charges have been filed in the crash, which remains under investigation.
