Carter, 90, announced on August. 3 that he had surgery to remove a small mass from his liver.

Though no connection has been publicly made to his current cancer diagnosis, Carter’s family has a history with pancreatic cancer, one of the types of cancers that can metastasize to the liver. Sometimes the primary site can’t be determined, so genetic analysis of the tumour might be done to see what mutations are driving it and what drugs might target those mutations. Raven lost her husband to cancer in March, and the former president, who had known Milton Raven for years, spoke at his funeral. Carter’s failure to secure their release, compounded by a failed military rescue attempt, would dog his presidency and scuttle his bid for a second term. She added that cancer inside a person who is 90 years old is definitely a serious problem, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that he can’t benefit from the treatment.
