Chavan Roosevelt Carter, 40, of Powder Springs, Ga., was charged Monday with aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, and disregarding a traffic-control device, the patrol said in a statement.
The patrol says 14-year-old Madison Creagan of West Shokan, New York, died in the crash near Sandusky in northern Ohio. Investigators say possible charges will be reviewed by the Erie County Prosecutor’s Office.
The crash occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m.in a construction zone at the 110.8 eastbound milepost of the Ohio Turnpike, police said. The nine vehicles had slowed down in traffic but were not stopped when the semi hit them.
The massive accident along the turnpike had traffic at a standstill for several hours. The median barrier separates that lane from the other eastbound lane. One lane westbound remained open the entire time the crash was being investigated and cleared.
