Cubs starter Lackey exits game with injury

The 23-year-old right-hander retired 16 of the last 17 hitters he faced as the Tigers kept the AL West-leading Rangers scoreless over the final 21 innings of the three-game series.

The Cardinals entered the eighth inning trailing 3-1, when Kolten Wong and Greg Garcia led off with singles against Hector Rondon. Then it all unraveled in the eighth inning.

Braun hit a two-run double in the first inning, a three-run homer in the second and his 22nd home run in the fourth.

That was followed one out later by a Brandon Moss solo shot.

Rondon was removed after five batters, registering only one out in what eventually was a 6-4 win for the Cardinals. “I came into the game to be aggressive, and they got me”. Like I said before, I need to make better pitches.

Trying to become the fifth Cubs starter to reach double-digit wins, Lackey gave up just one run and took a no-decision in his 106-pitch performance.

Said Lackey: “When you have the kind of lead we do, you sort of have leeway to do some things”.

“I’ve been feeling a little tight but nothing insane”, Lackey said. “The extra bullpen session was probably not the best thing for me”. “It’s nothing insane. Trust me, I’ve been out there feeling a lot worse so year, I’ll be all right”. “It’s hard for me right now because we lose the game”.

TORONTO – Troy Tulowitzki and Russell Martin hit back-to-back home runs, Marcus Stroman pitched 61/3 innings to win for the first time in four starts and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Houston Astros 9-2 on Sunday.

But at this point of the season when the Cubs have what appears to be a comfortable 12-game lead over the Cardinals in the Central Division, Maddon knew the situation called for him to be safe rather than sorry. I guess they watch these [in the family room] every game.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon says he’d have no problem with Major League Baseball shortening the season by adding more doubleheaders, but not drawn-out day-night twinbills. “We have to restructure this somehow”. “But at the end of the day, before this series began, based on all the stuff we had going on, you always will take that split, them coming in”.

According to a statement released by the club, Chicago Cubs’ starting pitcher John Lackey exited Sunday evening’s matchup against the St. Louis Cardinals with an apparent injury.

St. Louis cut the Chicago lead to one in the third. They will play six more times in the regular season.

“Right now their offensive side is pretty prodigious”, Maddon said. He is that good right now.

Reserve infielder Jimmy Paredes had his best offensive game of the season, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored to lead Philadelphia past Colorado.

The Cubs didn’t seem too concerned with their last two losses and Lackey didn’t seem anxious about his shoulder either. “Hi, I love you”. I just know his shoulder stiffened up, and they treated it. He felt better afterwards. “That is what I know”.

“I got to say hi to my kids in the kids’ room”, Lackey said.
