Faith leaders try to calm Milwaukee unrest
Speaking at a Sunday night vigil, Smith’s sister, Kimberley Neal, told The Associated Press that the family wants prosecutors to charge the officer who shot him.

Mr Barrett warned parents and guardians that police will be strictly enforcing the city’s 10pm curfew for teenagers.
The curfew earlier applied to teenagers up to and including 16-year-olds.
After the shooting, violence erupted on the city’s predominantly black north side, an area with a history of violence and distrust between police and the community.
“People of Sherman Park want their neighborhood back”. By signing the pledge, officials promise to take action to cut off funding to law enforcement agencies that discriminate and ensure independent investigation of law enforcement agencies, detailed data reporting about police stops and uses of force, comprehensive standards governing the use of force, and civilian oversight of policing.
The death of Sylville Smith, who was armed at the time of the shooting, sparked two nights of unrest in the city.
Protests first erupted Saturday, when a crowd of about 200 turned violent following the shooting of Smith, who was in a auto with another individual when he was stopped by two police officers. The shooting is being investigated by the state. Protests were peaceful most of Sunday evening before the confrontation after 11 p.m. Seventeen people were arrested, and four officers were injured. He said about 25 seconds elapsed before Smith, who had run a few dozen feet, was shot.
Asked at the news conference why officers had stopped the auto on Saturday, Police Chief Edward Flynn said the officers had not been interviewed yet and that they would be interviewed later on Monday.
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett joined Chief Flynn in the news conference. He did not say what would happen to teens who are found outside in Milwaukee past the curfew deadline.
Milwaukee was beset by protests and calls for police reform after an officer shot and killed Dontre Hamilton, a mentally ill black man, in 2014.
Despite the violence, police said the National Guard had not been called in, as authorities worked to restore order.
“If you shut them off, then there may be some retaliation by them”, Givens said. They threw bottles, chunks of concrete and rocks at officers.
The police chief implored unruly protesters to stop the destruction and lamented the loss of jobs from torched businesses. “Those individuals are deliberately trying to damage Sherman Park and this city”. There was no evidence that Smith fired his weapon, which was loaded with 23 bullets, the chief said. But Flynn said clearly, the community is taking a leadership role in reducing tension in the neighborhood. Police said one person was shot at a Milwaukee protest on Sunday and officers used an armored vehicle to retrieve the injured victim and ta.
Protestor Lewis Lee said it’s possible the demonstrators have met one of their goals. First responders took him to the hospital with a serious gunshot injury.
Imam Maulama Akonjee and friend Thara Uddin were both shot in the head on Saturday afternoon by a man who approached them from behind near the al-Furqan Jame Masjid mosque.
Police say an 18-year-old Milwaukee man was seriously injured when he was shot during a late night protest over the police killing of a black man.

Alderman Khalif Rainey, who represents the neighborhood where the incident occurred, had suggested on Sunday that failure to deal with the frustrations of Milwaukee’s black residents – poverty, joblessness, lack of opportunity – could lead to unrest elsewhere in the city, including downtown where hundreds of millions of dollars are being invested in redevelopment.
