Rio medalist del Potro gets US Open wild card — APNewsBreak
It was Murray’s 18th straight victory following his second Wimbledon title in July.

Since carrying the Team GB flag at the opening ceremony, Murray refocused on defending his London 2012 title and came through several tight scrapes to earn his final berth.
“Getting to carry the flag in the opening ceremony was an fantastic experience”, he said.
“It has been a build-up of emotions”.
Speaking to ITV’s Lorraine, Judy Murray continued: “I lasted about three games with the sound on and then actually it’s very hard listening to what the commentators are saying about your child, so it’s actually easier to watch it with just drowning them out”.
“I was tremendously exhausted”. Carrying the flag was incredible.
“It’s quite tricky and I didn’t fancy the whole thing with the language barrier, not being able to make yourself understood”.
“I had to regroup and get my mind on the matches so, to finish it with a match like that, obviously I was fairly emotional at the end”. I wasn’t thinking about that when I was playing.
“It means a lot. Made slightly more bearable after I switched the sound off after 3 games”. But I managed to get through it.
The fourth set was a match in itself, with Murray three times coming from a break down after Del Potro had gone from the verge of total exhaustion to looking like he might force a decider.
That was the key moment.
Four consecutive services breaks were shared, before Del Potro found himself serving at 5-4. “It’s not for me to say (where it ranks)”.
“This was tough emotionally and physically, there were lots of ups and downs”.
The world number two and his Argentine opponent shared a long hug at the net, with both man trying to hold back the tears, after a punishing, see-sawing, four-hour contest played out in front of a boisterous crowd at the Olympic Tennis Centre. And Murray loved it. Before beating Roger Federer in the 2012 Olympic final, Murray had never earned one of his sport’s most significant titles. We rarely play in atmospheres like that. Then potentially when I was at the US Open that caught up with me a bit. “In the Davis Cup it’s either a home tie or away tie, so having the stadium so split made for a great atmosphere”.
From Andy Murray, who became the first man or woman to win two singles golds. It was an awesome couple of weeks after losing the Wimbledon final just a few weeks before but as I say this was much harder than London. It was much harder here. On the other side, del Potro, who made a fabulous run in Rio, had a hard task against Rafael Nadal.
“Here anything could have happened”.
Murray also hailed 2009 US Open champion del Potro who has fought his way back from three wrist surgeries which threatened his career.
“I’m sure there will be some videos somewhere, so I can show her the matches if she’s interested”. I kind of struggle with that a bit, so I just decided I wasn’t going to go.
And now rather than revel in the glory of gold, Murray is off. “It’s wonderful he’s back at this level again and he should be very proud”.
“The last few months, since the clay court season started, I’ve been really consistent and the challenge is to maintain that consistency”, he added. “I’ve had good wins against top players”. His consistency this year has been absolutely exceptional. What I have been doing in four months he has been doing all year.
“For now the US Open is the next big goal”.

The former world No. 4 and 2009 US Open victor made it clear that after several wrist surgeries he belongs in the top 10 when healthy. I felt all of these things on court. Until he lost to Del Potro in the first round.
