Adam Lallana: Liverpool win over Arsenal has laid down benchmark for season

“Physically we are not ready”, Wenger told reporters at the Emirates Stadium.

The good news is that with an worldwide break coming up, Ramsey should only miss two Arsenal games so the damage is limited and Jack Wilshere or Santi Cazorla should be back in contention for a starting spot this weekend.

Klopp charged down the touchline to revel in Mane’s magnificent 63rd-minute goal and, by the time he realised he might be expressing premature joy, it was too late. It was a game of contrast between two halves but I felt as well that mentally we kept going and we have been absolutely remarkable on that front.

“The manager will do that, for sure. There are a lot of things to improve on and work on but a lot of good things as well”.

“That’s really important. It gives us on one side confidence and the knowledge that we can score goals”.

And there was little the Arsenal ‘keeper could do as Liverpool stunned the hosts in the opening minutes of the second half.

“Phil again came up trumps with the free-kick”.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Jamie Carragher said: “Mane was bought very early and people raised eyebrows at the fee, but I think the longer we go on it will be looked at as a fair price”.

While Wijnaldum could have done better with his chance, Coutinhos free kick combined power and precision as it flew into the top left-hand corner, giving Cech no chance.

The man beaten by the free-kick, Petr Cech, seemed to endure an opening day to forget as images posted on Twitter after the match appeared to show he had pranged his auto while trying to leave the Emirates.

With Per Mertesacker and Gabriel injured and Laurent Koscielny short of match fitness, Wenger deployed Calum Chambers, 21, and 20-year-old debutant Rob Holding at centre-back in Saturday’s game.

“We will try, but when they have not enough preparation they get injured”, he said of his rested players.

There was no need for such excuses from Mourinho, whose first league game in charge of United was a far more comfortable affair.

“I thought this was made for him, I thought this was his time”.

“The momentum shifted when they got an equaliser in the last minute of the first half”.

To get the players they need, Wenger will have to spend big though, and it will be interesting to see if he is willing to do so as a way of turning the tide back in his favour.
