Martha’s Vineyard: Obama Interrupting Vacation to Campaign for Clinton

Obama pointedly did not mention Donald Trump, Clinton’s Republican opponent, by name and said he’s exhausted of talking about the NY businessman he earlier this month dismissed as “unfit to serve”.

He also urged the Democratic donors at a Clinton fundraiser to help counter an “unrelenting negative campaign” against the former secretary of state “that has made a dent in the opinion of people even who are inclined to vote for her”.

“If we are not running scared until the day after the election, we are going to be making a grave mistake”, Mr Obama told some 60 donors who contributed US$10,000 each to attend the fundraiser at a private home on the island. He told the donors he was exhausted of talking about Mrs Clinton’s rival.

Among the media outlets, Trump’s campaign has received a wave of bad publicity over the past few weeks, falling further behind Clinton on the path to the presidency.

“You know he seems to do a good job mentioning his own name”, Obama said in a PBS interview in June. “But she is the person who’s going to do the work”.

Mr. Obama has been vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard with the first family since last week and will return to Washington next week. He’s expected to spend much of the fall stumping for Clinton. Instead they tried switching the venue to the Jefferson Hotel (a frequent fundraising spot for Obama only two blocks from the White House). The White House said the First Family, a description signifying the inclusion of Michelle Obama and daughters Malia and Sasha, had joined friends for a “social event” at the Southern seafood restaurant.

The details of the deliberations were revealed in hacked Democratic National Committee emails that were posted by Wikileaks, including some salty language from DNC staffers miffed at losing out on what they expected to be a high-yield event.

“He really won’t go up 20 minutes for $350k?” another staffer responded.

Adding a touch of politics to his vacation, President Barack Obama on Monday urged Democrats to campaign aggressively for the next 80 days to elect presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, saying “if we do not do our jobs, then it’s still possible for her to lose”.
