The talk at the Rio Games: Atrocious weather

Carrington, 27, who moved into kayaking from a surf lifesaving background, shot to prominence in the sport in 2011 when she won the world championship K1 200m crown in Szeged, Hungary.

Kiwi kayaker Lisa Carrington has successfully defended her K-1 200 title, powering home to claim the gold medal at Rio.

The 27-year-old powered ahead in the second half finishing half a length in front with a time of 39.864.

Carrington powered to the win after a strong second half of the race. “I get nerves and a little bit of doubt every now and then so I guess it just adds to my performance if I embrace it right”. The gold’s up for grabs for all of us, I mean I really wanted it but I’m just happy to have raced.

Carrington’s speed off the line has been one of her few weaknesses, but she made a fast start to both her heat and semi-final.

She has not been beaten over the distance in five years.
