After placing slugger Yoenis Cespedes on the disabled list earlier in the day, the Mets (56-52) nudged back within one game of Miami and St. Louis for the second wild-card position in the National League entering a weekend visit to Detroit.

While the quad likely isn’t too affected during golf, the Mets have struggled while Cespedes has been dealing with the injury, going 8-14 from July 8 through Wednesday.
Retired major leaguer Kevin Millar tweeted a photo of himself with Cespedes after a round of golf Wednesday, which did not bother Collins. Asked about that image before Thursday nights Subway Series game at Yankee Stadium, Collins raised his voice. I dont care about perception.
“I can’t really tell you when I’m going to play him”, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said before the game. Rookie outfielder Brandon Nimmo will be recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas, where he was optioned Tuesday.

“The golf is bad optics”, Alderson said Thursday.
Alderson has reached out to Cespedes’ representatives to discuss his golfing habits, but the larger issue for the Mets is they will now have to try to stay afloat without their best player. Alderson said he simply wants Cespedes back and doesn’t want to take any chances in delaying his return.

Actually, Alderson might be the one dealing with reality here. “Hopefully at the end of two weeks he’ll be back and hopefully 100 percent or close to it”.
The Mets managed a series split with the Yankees in the Bronx, as Bartolo Colon threw six-and-two-thirds solid innings and allowed only one run.
The 41-year-old Rodriguez wasn’t in the lineup Thursday night at Yankee Stadium for the wrapup of the Subway Series.
Rodriguez, 41, is a lifetime.442 hitter with eight homers against Colon, 43.
With New York falling out of the playoff race, you may see the team start giving its young talent more reps, such as Gary Sanchez.
Dropped in May after starting 0-6, Severino was banished to the minor leagues for two months.
The reality is, with or without Cespedes, and with a pitching staff that can’t duplicate the accomplishments of last season, and with 57 games to go, there does not seem to be a wake up call with this offense.
