Chicago Bears training camp notebook: August 11

He described the team’s approach on offense this season as featuring more “smash-mouth” running that he thinks will allow the team to establish “rhythm and kind of wear on defenses and wear them down” as games progress. “We want to limit our mistakes, our mental errors”. He’s been with quarterbacks than can do it and quarterbacks that can’t do it. “And last year, I just felt like we had all the pieces and I just felt like there were a few things that were missing”.

Down in Tennessee, Marcus Mariota went through his first nine practices without throwing an interception in team (11-on-11) or 7-on-7 periods.

Jay Cutler during training camp practice.

As for Grossman: “I wanted to punch Rex Grossman in Miami [where the Bears lost Super Bowl XLI to the Indianapolis Colts]”, Briggs said. “Adam [Gase] does an incredible job scheme-wise and putting quarterbacks in the right position”. Mills may not be the best offensive lineman in the league, but the fact Acho is out there running with the first-team defense speaks volumes for how much trust this coaching staff has in the veteran linebacker. “And Adam and Dowell [Loggains, quarterback coach] and Mike [Groh, receivers coach] and Frank [Smith, tight ends coach] and everybody else on board with the passing and getting their guys finely tuned, is helping”.

“You’re amusing”, said a humored Cutler to the reporter. “Camp’s camp. We’re not getting hit”. These aren’t live bullets. If we had a slant route, I used to be going to go within the gap and he would discover me.

“That’s definitely true”, Cutler said.

But that doesn’t stop every Bears fan you run into from asking the same question: How many games do you think they can win? And Adam doesn’t want to put us in positions where we might fail. “We’ll try to do what we need to do within a game”. White is the 47th WR in Fantasy Pros consensus rankings, while Eddie Royal is ranked 66 and Marquess Wilson is 73.

Jeffery made a handful of excellent catches Monday and stood out once again on Tuesday.

“He’s done everything that we’ve asked him to do and more”, Groh said. “From spring until now, he’s been consistent”. If that is the case, and I’m not saying it is, perhaps White’s training in advance of the draft created issues for him. I think that was the plan before White’s injury popped up. “Those guys are really close together”. Both the No. 1 and No. 2 offenses drove down the field for touchdowns and Jimmy Clausen managed to get the ball in field goal range in a situation where he only had seven seconds to operate with. They like the up-tempo stuff.
