Except he’s now been left with egg on his face.

Burnley has announced the signing of Steven Defour from Anderlecht for a club-record fee.

The Belgium global, capped 46 times for his country, has penned a three-year contract at Turf Moor on leaving Anderlecht.

The K.R.C Genk youth product is excited by the new challenge that the Premier League is set to present to him.

Defour has won league titles in Belgium with Standard Liege and in Portugal with Porto.

‘It has been a long few weeks, but I am very happy to be here, ‘ the central midfielder said.

“I’m looking forward to every game”. When I knew that Burnley was interested, I took some time to look into the club and I saw some interesting stuff.

“Steven was a target of ours and it’s been a hard deal to do, but we got there in the end”, added Dyche.

“He’s a good player with a depth of experience at global level and also Champions League”.

The 28-year-old Belgium global becomes the club’s fourth signing after the arrival of Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Nick Pope from Charlton and Jon Flanagan on loan from Liverpool.

‘He’s a good player with a depth of experience at worldwide level and also Champions League.

Defour was previously linked with a move to Liverpool, though Reds have probably blocked that out of their minds, unsurprisingly, as it was in 2010 when Roy Hodgson was in the Anfield hotseat.

Sean Dyche feels Burnley deserved at least a point, but that’s the reality of the Premier League.

Burnley were defeated 1-0 by Swansea City in their Premier League opener on Saturday, and host Liverpool at Turf Moor this weekend.
