Leno, who has continued doing stand-up since stepping down as a late night host in February 2014, told TV writers at the Television Critics Association Thursday that he was excited to return to the small screen.
Asked how he was transitioning to life after “Tonight”, Leno said he was relieved by not having to spend four or five hours every day writing jokes for that night’s telecast. “As long as it’s No. 1 when you pass it off to the next guy, you’ve done your job”, he said.
Leno went on, explaining why Colbert may be more approachable than his skeptics think. The demo is pretty good. “He’s smart. … I think he’ll do well with mainstream America”.
Leno, a renowned auto enthusiast whose famed collection includes 135 cars and 117 motorcycles, uses many of his own vehicles in the show, because he can avoid hefty insurance waiver costs for expensive cars.
Leno also performed somewhat of a monologue as he started talking about Trump, who is running for President.
Former late night talk show staple Jay Leno is shifting to CNBC as host of “Jay Leno’s Garage, which covers all things automotive (including classic cars, super cars, restoration projects, road tests, investments and the inner workings of the vehicle collectors’ market)”.
“CNBC continues to invest in original programming as it establishes the network as a primetime entertainment destination – and who better to invest in than the king of late night?” He added, “I’d like to see more diversity – there should be a female host, another African-American host in late-night”. “He teaches Sunday school”. “He and Jeb Bush are frontrunners”.
