Comedy Central Cancels ‘The Nightly Show’ Months Before 2016 Election

That’s what happened with The Nightly Show this week, as it was announced that Comedy Central had cancelled the show after just 21-months on the air.

“On the plus side, our show going off the air has to mean only one thing”, Wilmore added.

“The short-term replacement for Wilmore will be moving Chris Hardwick’s pop culture quiz show “@Midnight” to the 11:30 p.m. time slot that follows “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah”. “My only regret is that we won’t be around to cover this truly insane election season. I guess I hadn’t counted on “The Unblackening” happening on my show”.

Larry Wilmore, born in Los Angeles County and raised in Pomona, has lost his NY gig.

Low viewership is the reason behind the show’s cancellation, according to Comedy Central’s President, Kent Alterman.

Comedy Central executives have been frustrated that the show hasn’t clicked with a wider margin of viewers.

“Nightly Show” contributors Jordan Carlos, Grace Parra, Host Larry Wilmore and Senator Bernie Sanders speak on “The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore” on January 5, 2016 in New York City.

The late-night lineup across networks is famously white, with Trevor Noah of “The Daily Show” now the only other person of color heading up a late-night show.

“Unfortunately it hasn’t resonated with our audience”, Alterman continued. Comedy Central confirmed today that it has pulled the plug on “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore”. At the very least, his show will be missed for the way it tackled the increasingly visible issues that black Americans face every day-like police violence-with blistering wit.

How do you feel about the end of The Nightly Show? The Daily Show’s Stewart pitched the idea for the series as “a show that exists in between news and punditry, or “fake news’ and punditry”, he told EW in 2014″. With Jon Stewart, “The Daily Show” averaged 2.1 million, but with Noah it averages 1.3 million.
