Indian Embassy in Pak celebrates 70th Independence Day

After participating in the closing bell ceremony at NASDAQ, he will attend the Independence Day celebrations at the United Nations headquarters, where the highlight is a concert by Oscar-winning composer A R Rahman and a photo exhibition commemorating the birth centenary of India’s carnatic music legend M S Subbulakshmi.

Minister for Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna, Member of Parliament Chandra Arya, Deputy Mayor Bob Monette and the High Commissioner addressed the gathering.

Minister of State for External Affairs M J Akbar will ring the closing bell at the NASDAQ stock exchange in the heart of the popular Times Square here tomorrow to mark India’s 70th Independence Day. A cultural programme was also organised. Mr. Gokhale also read out President Pranab Mukherjee’s address to the nation followed by recital of patriotic songs. A similar celebration was held at the Indian Consulate in Guangzhou led by Consulate General Y K Sailas Thangal.

Celebrations were held across the USA a day prior (according to their local time) in order to coincide with revelry in India, with the largest gathering reported from Fremont in California and Edison in New Jersey attended by thousands of people, with marching bands and colourful cultural extravaganza.

Congresswoman Grace Ming from NY also tweeted to greet India, Pakistan and South Korea on the occasion of their Independence Day.

Several events have been organized in the run up to the Independence Day.

“This event proves there are no divides”, he said at London’s O2 Arena, where he performed some of his biggest hits including his late uncle, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s famous Qawwali numbers like “Kinna Sona” and “Yeh Jo Halka Halka”.
