The New York Yankees just received awful news on flamethrowing right-hander Nathan Eovaldi.

Eovaldi will have surgery to fix a torn flexor tendon as well as a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow, according to the various reporters at Yankee Stadium. The 27-year-old will need two surgeries, sidelining him for the remainder of 2016 and all of 2017.

The good news for Eovaldi is that he’s still young. He told reporters he has torn flexor tendon and partially torn UCL. But Eovaldi, who was briefly demoted to the bullpen at in July, finishes the year with a 9-8 record and a 4.76 ERA.

Nathan Eovaldi’s time with the Yankees may be over.

Because this is Eovladi’s second Tommy John operation – he had the same surgery done in high school – the recovery time could be up to 18 months.

Eovaldi will be a free agent after the 2017 season, making it unlikely the Yankees tender him a contract after this season.

It’s a bad break for Eovaldi, who is set to be a free agent after the 2017 season. He also tore his flexor tendon off the bone in his right arm and will need a separate surgery to fix that injury.
