A power outage at a section of JFK Airport in Queens is causing some delays and terminal inconveniences Tuesday afternoon.

Police evacuated Terminal 8 as a precaution around 9:30 p.m. Sunday after receiving a 911 call reporting the sound of a gunshot near the departures area.

American Airlines implemented “alternative transportation” to ferry passengers between terminals.

The outage, which may have been related to storms near the airport, has shut down elevators, escalators, and checked baggage screening, said American Airlines officials. We are now offering additional flexibility that may allow customers to change their travel plans without a fee and we are doing everything possible to get travelers to their destinations as quickly as possible.

According to the flight tracking company, FlightAware, all inbound flights were being held at their origin until 11:30 p.m. due to security.

“Severe weather is also impacting the area and will result in delays and cancellations”, the airline said by email. Departures were delayed up to 1 hour and 15 minutes due to weather.
