Crews extinguish fire at Michigan power plant; no injuries

Authorities are investigating the cause of a massive fire that raged for more than 10 hours at the St. Clair Power Plant in East China Township Thursday and Friday.

The Marine City Fire Chief says the facility is the main DTE plant.

Firefighters from across St. Clair County were called to the plant about 40 miles northeast of Detroit as thick, billowing black and gray smoke rose from the burning structure.

Roads in the area have been shut down by police.

DTE Energy said late Friday afternoon that its access to the St. Clair Power Plant in East China Township in St. Clair County remains limited and that there is no estimate when the facility will reopen.

Air monitoring was continuing with readings said to be within normal limits outside the facility perimeter.

DTE customers are not expected to see any changes in their electric service. A utility also said that there were no announcements yet when the plant will open.

No one was injured in the blaze and there was no immediate public health concern.

The plant invoked emergency procedures and shut down all units onsite by 7:01 p.m. DTE Energy said employees were evacuated safely and that there were no known injuries at the plant. St. Clair Power Plant located at East China Township in MI has remained closed after a large fire occurred, sending large smoke in the air visible for miles. The units in East China Township, the River Rouge facility in the Detroit area and the Trenton facility in suburban Detroit are to be retired between 2020 and 2023.

The Times-Herald of Port Huron reports that the plant has been in service since 1953 and employs 280 workers.
